The three main steel families

Carbon Steel
Carbon steel can take an excellent edge and is often loved by enthusiasts, but it requires more care because it can rust and develop a patina.
Powder Metallurgy Steel

Hardness and toughness are different

Patina vs. rust
Carbon steel often develops a gray, blue, or dark patina over time. That is normal and can even help protect the blade. Orange rust is different. Rust is active corrosion and should be removed before it damages the steel.

Myth: Stainless Steel Never Rusts
Stainless steel is stain-resistant, not stain-proof. Moisture, salt, acids, and neglect can still cause rust spots or staining.
Myth: Carbon Steel Is Always Better
